A Langley Mill cafe boss wants local diners to know she is open for business despite the charity which runs its premises going into administration.

Susan Place, proprietor of the Bridge Cafe in the Bridge Centre on Cromford Road, says that since Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire went into adminsitration last month, custom has fallen off drastically.

Government funding cuts caused Groundwork Derbyshire, which was set up in 1988 to improve commnities, to go under with 20 of the 33-strong workforce made redundant.

Susan, 57, of Howitt Street, Heanor, said: “Everybody thinks that we have finished but we haven’t. We have lost a lot of custom but we need to let people know we’re still here.”

The cafe was opened in 2009 and offers three different-sized breakfasts, midday meals and delivers meals to the elderly. A knitting club is held on Wednesdays and a luncheon club on Thursdays. Susan used to run a cafe in the Cosy Market in Heanor until the premises were gutted by fire in 2001. She says she was helped back on to her feet by the opportunity to run Salcare. She said: “We had a fantastic business that was really doing well. It makes you realise that there are people with nothing. It made me realise that money’s not everything.”
