Give Morris dance a go in Fritchley

People are invited to try Morris Dancing in Fritchley.

Ripley Morris Men are appealing for new members to join them as the original troupe, who have been together for over 30 years, begin to feel their age.

Clive Sturgess, of Ambergate, said: “For over 30 years, Ripley Morris men have been entertaining the public in Derbyshire and much further afield dancing the traditional dances of England.

“Many of the members have been with the side since it reformed in the 1980’s and to put it bluntly are beginning to feel their age. We want people to join us in workshops, where we are confident that we can teach at least one dance up to a level where it could be performed in public.”

Clive says Morris Men trips have included visits to France, Germany and Denmark, as well as appearances in Trafalgar Square, Oxford, Cambridge and at various folk festivals. He added: “Often we join with other Morris sides for days or weekends of dance in many parts of the country. There is a great social aspect to being a Morris dancer. After a dancing performance, there is often a music and singing session in a pub. Many people who have never sung or played in public find the confidence to have a go. That’s what it is all about, having a go!”

The first practice gets underway at 8pm on Thursday September 20 at the Congregational Church Hall in Fritchley

A work shop will be held at Cromford Mill on October 27.
