Appliances Direct, on Berristow Lane, which sells a range of household appliances, is celebrating after announcing record sales figures – up more than 70 per cent on the previous year.

Turnover rocketed from £30 million in 2011 to over £50 million in 2012.

Nick Glynne, managing director at Appliances Direct, said: “We have had a tremendously successful year, despite the period of economic downturn.

“At the moment it seems like barely a week goes by without hearing of another big name casualty on the high street with the likes of Comet, HMV and Jessops all going bust.

“However our business model, where the majority of our sales are made online, but we also have expert advice for our customers either over the phone or at our showroom, seems to be working.”
