Eat well campaign for the elderly
A road show tackling malnutrition in older people is coming to Heanor.
The Eat Well campaign is aimed at older people who are unintentionally losing weight – as well as their family and carers.
Healthy eating messages like five-a-day and low cholesterol don’t apply to this group and they should choose full-fat food and snack on high-calorie treats to gain weight.
The campaign will help people spot the symptoms in elderly friends, relatives and other older people.
The county council’s cabinet member for public health, Carol Hart, said: “If you’re concerned about yourself, or someone you know, who is underweight, you can pop in to one of our road shows, find out more and pick up a booklet with practical advice to help you.”
The road show comes to the Age UK shop on Heanor’s Market Place, on Tuesday, March 5.
Malnutrition and dehydration cause serious health problems and cost the taxpayer billions of pounds a year.
It is estimated some three million older people in the UK are malnourished.
