Developer gives assurances as bungalows plan given go-ahead

A PLAN to build five bungalows on a former Ilkeston allotment has been given the go-ahead.

Two neighbours to the overgrown, vacant site off Kensington Gardens spoke at an Erewash Borough Council planning meeting on Wednesday night about their concerns about access to the new development.

Patricia Szep, of Park Road, and Matthew Smith, of Kensington Gardens, both said that the proposed access to the site – a private road – was too narrow for cars.

Robert Oxley, spoke on behalf of Heanor-based Buxton Brothers, which has already built houses in the surrounding estate.

“We have come here to listen and to give assurance that the development will be accessed off the private drive,” he said.

“They will be single storey properties and existing rights of access will be maintained.”

Councillors unanimously voted for the plan, adding a condition that the private access road should be hard surfaced.

Cllr John Frudd praised the plan: “It’s sad to see allotments fall into disrepair but I think this plan is a good tidy-up of the site.”
