Church’s grand re-opening

An Alfreton church re-opens this weekend after a two-year closure for a £1.1 million rebuilding project.

An opening ceremony takes place at the Watchorn Church, on Derby Road, at 1.15pm on Saturday October 20, followed by a church service at 2pm.

Afterwards everyone will be invited to share in refreshments and look around the new building and at 7pm there will be a time of worship and prayer.

The church, Sunday school and manse were gifted to the Primitive Methodist Church by Alfreton-born Robert Watchorn to commemorate his mother, Alicia Watchorn. The Sunday school was replaced and the church was renovated.

The Rev John Peters said the 83-year-old building had been too costly to run.
