Church has a new vicar
A VILLAGE church has welcomed a new vicar to the helm.
Father Peter Davis has taken over at St Thomas’s Church in Somercotes and is settling into his new role well.
The former religious education teacher replaces Father Theo Holmes, who was acting curate there.
Father Davis, 60, was born in South Wales and taught for most of his career at the Deepings Comprehensive School in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire.
After being ordained in 2003, the village’s new vicar took up a post as rector of five churches in Norfolk.
His last position was as a vicar at a small church in Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire.
Father Davis took over at St Thomas’s in Somercotes on December 21.
“I am settling in very well,” he said. “It’s wonderful. It’s what I am used to really – the community are very friendly and warm.
“They are what I would call very organic, earthly, welcoming people.”
This year Father Davis said he is looking forward to Lent Sunday on February 26, where the area’s Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies take part in a special parade at the church.
