Campaigners fighting plans to build 1,000 new homes in Amber Valley have applied to get four sites recognised as ‘village greens’ to block the developments.

Amber Valley SOS are calling on local people to help them prove that the greenfield and Green Belt sites are well-used so they can be registered.

The campaigners are set against proposals to build a Morrisons supermarket at the Greenwich in Ripley, 560 houses on open greenfield land at Outseats Farm in Alfreton, 98 houses around Codnor Common in Waingroves and a development around Lockton Avenue in Heanor.

Sylvia Mason, of Amber Valley SOS, said: “We know there to be 2,500 un-built homes with planning permission in Amber Valley; we also know there to be 2,000 plus empty homes, and 100 hectares of brownfield sites in the same area.

“We will fight to stop the developers and council from stealing our countryside when there are alternatives.

“We ask people to please assist us by logging onto one our web sites and down loading the Village Green questionnaires, fill them in and send them to the relevant people.”

Forms can also be picked up from Ripley Printers and the Deli and the Wash House in Alfreton. Over 150 people have already submitted information about the sites in Ripley and Waingroves. Activities so far listed include bike riding, dog walking, bird and bat watching, sports and picnics, fetes and carnivals, kite flying and camping.
