Time running out to nominate for the Derbyshire Blue Plaque scheme
Time is running out to make sure your favourite Derbyshire person or place is in the running for a Derbyshire County Council Blue Plaque.
All nominations for the next round of blue plaques have to be in by noon on Tuesday, July 24, so don’t delay.
You can make your nominations easily online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/blueplaques or write in to the county council at Blue Plaques, Chief Executive’s Office, Derbyshire County Council, County Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3AG.
Nominations should be in no more than 500 words and should include a detailed account of the nominee’s achievements. There should also be a suggestion of where the plaque could be placed.
Derbyshire County Council leader and cabinet member for culture Councillor Andrew Lewer said he had received several excellent nominations already and was looking forward to seeing more.
“We have had some great nominations, including several household names,” said Councillor Lewer.
“But there is still time to get your suggestion in for the Derbyshire person or place you think deserves recognition.”
Nominations for the third round of blue plaques so far include the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale, Belper philanthropist George Herbert Strutt and founder of the factory system Sir Richard Arkwright.
Derbyshire County Council launched its blue plaque scheme in 2009 to celebrate the important people and places of Derbyshire.
Previous winners include Hadfield-born actor Arthur Lowe of Dad’s Army fame, Belper industrial spy Samuel Slater, mother of the Guiding movement Lady Baden-Powell and knitwear entrepreneur John Smedley.
Fresh nominations can include war heroes and memorials, local heroes and famous people, cultural and heritage connections, philanthropists and entrepreneurs and buildings of historic or architectural importance.
Councillor Lewer added: “We have already honoured some of Derbyshire’s great and good but I know there are plenty of others out there who should have a plaque.
“Put in your nominations and give the public the chance to choose who they think deserves one.”
Anyone nominated for a blue plaque must have passed away at least 20 years ago. And owners of nominated properties must agree to the nomination. Please include a suggestion in your nomination where the plaque could be located.
Once nominations are received, a judging panel will draw up a shortlist after which the public will be invited to vote for their favourites.
The shortlist will be announced in the autumn with the six winners revealed in January 2013.
