Summer activities in LAngley Mill

Summer holiday sessions for youngsters in Langley Mill have proved to be popular.

More than 450 youngsters took part in weekly activities at Aldecar Community College during the six week school holidays.

Youngsters between the ages of seven and 15 were offered the chance to take part in arts and crafts as well as sports such as football, cricket, rounders, dodgeball and volley ball.

They were first set up in 2009 by Aldecar and Langley Mill Parish Council and the Codnor, Waingroves and Langley Mill Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team with the help of Sporting Futures.

The aim of the sessions was to help reduce nuisance behaviour and prevent youngsters from becoming involved with anti-social behaviour or crime.

PCSO Jenny Lorimer of the Codnor, Waingroves and Langley Mill Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are now in our fourth year of running these activities during each school holiday and every year we continue to see more and more young people coming along.

“I am also pleased to be able to say that during the sessions we received just one report of nuisance behaviour, which shows how positive the sessions can be for both the community and the youngsters themselves.”

A number of young people have also taken part in a Level 2 Sports Leadership Course, delivered by Sporting Futures, and completed training in first aid as a result of the project.

PCSO Lorimer added: “We had a number of young people who had been coming along to sessions, but unfortunately were too old for the scheme. By working with Sporting Futures we were able to give this group an opportunity continue to take part and hopefully offering an opportunity for them to take the qualification further if they wish.

“They had to complete a minimum of 10 hours volunteering as part of the initiative, but they all completed many more. It was fantastic that they gave up their own time to help others and I hope that in return they have picked up some valuable skills and knowledge from experienced sports coaches.”

Sessions are being planned for youngsters during the October half term and PCSO Lorimer is hoping to be able to offer
