Steve’s biking success for daughter Rebecca

A Ripley dad whose 12-year-old girl was diagnosed with diabetes has raised more cash for charity than 89 other cyclists who took part with him in a biking challenge.

Steve Edwards decided to raise funds for Diabetes UK after his daughter Rebecca was told she had the type-one variant of the condition three years ago. Now he has powered past the £1,000 mark.

Type-one is the rarer kind of diabetes and develops if the body cannot produce insulin.

Steve, 42, said the family had received support from the charity after the diagnosis so he decided to sign up for its Rutland Water Bike Ride.

After completing the 23-mile route, it emerged he had raised £1,069 – the most out of all 90 cyclists who saddled up for the challenge. As a result, he received a bike worth £369 from manufacturer Giant to mark his efforts.

Mr Edwards, of Bideford Close, Ripley, said “My wife Rachel and I are so proud of the way Rebecca has handled her diagnosis. She now leads the normal life of any 12-year-old girl. No one from our family had been diagnosed with diabetes before so it was a steep learning curve. We found the support and information that Diabetes UK provided invaluable and wanted to give something back.”

Joy Jones, Diabetes UK’s East Midlands fund-raiser, said: “We want to say a huge thank-you to Steve for the £1,069 he raised for us.”
