Shop gives hope to pets

An animal lover from Codnor Park has opened up a charity shop to raise funds for a pet rescue organisation.

Lauren Burridge opened Furever Chances in Heanor Road in Loscoe on August 3 to help Pet Samaritans in Chesterfield, which rehomes unwanted and abandoned animals.

Lauren, 29, who is a confirmed friend of the animal kingdom with five horses, two dogs and two cats of her own, struck out on her own after working for the Lighthouse chain of charity shops.

She said: “Obviously lots of puppies and kittens get abandoned, but horses also get neglected in fields. Pet Samaritans finds homes for dogs, cats, rabbits and birds but pays to keep the horses.

“There are quite a few charity shops in Heanor but we get an awful lot of people who come through the door who want to give to animal charities.

“I am an animal lover myself and I know how much it costs to keep them.”

Lauren got help from her brother Dean and father Patrick, to refit the former furniture shop on Heanor Road. She added: “It’s run on a voluntary basis. Because I have used my money to set it up I take a small wage.”

Lauren is also following in her mother Elaine’s footsteps who manages the Expectations charity shop on Butterley Hill. Elaine said: “I think it’s brilliant. She has got five horses of her own, two dogs and two cats. We have had dogs left in the yard. We rescued a dog from a bus stop in Wales and we’ve still got him!”

The shop is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am to 3pm on Sunday.

It sells quality furniture, bric-a-brac, bedding and curtains, childrens’ clothing and toys, as well as electrical goods, books, video games and DVDs. It operates a free collections service. Call 07977763371.
