Sanctuary still needs donations
NRHN 11-08-12 BE 9 Fiona Coulson from Heanor, with her cat. She is trying to save a Cypriot cat sanctuary.
An appeal by a Heanor woman to save more than 50 pets from being put to sleep at a recession-hit cat sanctuary has so far seen ten saved.
Fiona Coulson, of Brockhall Rise, delivered a plea to News readers in August, asking them to adopt a cat or a dog from Cyprus Cat and Dog Rescue, or donate money, as its ex-pat owners are struggling to keep it afloat.
Despite some success - Fiona, who is a regional fundraiser for the sanctuary and even adopted her own cat Dixie from there, says there are still several animals at risk there.
She said: “It’s excellent news but it still leaves quite a number of them on death row.
“What’s not great news is that we feel that some of the donations could be a one-off for August.
“The difficulty now is getting people to sustain those donations.”
Sanctuary owners June and Michael Ratcliff moved from Essex to the Cyprus in 2002, and after being shocked by the neglect faced by some animals in Cyprus and quickly set up the centre, which currently has 49 cats and three dogs.
When June and Michael lost their jobs this year, they have struggled financially - and say the property is on the brink of being reposessed unless it can raise regular funds to stay open on a month-by-month basis.
Fiona, 47, said donations can buy the owners more time to get the animals rehomed.
She added: “If the bank doesn’t get paid at the end of each month, the property is reposessed, simple as that.
“June and Michael say they can live in a tent out there - but it’s the animals that are the concern.”
If anyone is interested in adopting a cat they should head to www.cypruspridehouse.com.
All potential adopters homes are be checked before they can take in a pet and all animals arrive in the country fully flea-treated and vaccinated. A minimum donation of £100 is required.
