New sports area for Somercotes

Work starts this week at a Somercotes community centre to create a synthetic grass multi-sports area.

Somerlea Park Community Centre received nearly £50,000 from the Biffa Award to transform four underused tennis courts into an area suitable for football, hockey and netball.

Centre secretary Gordon Blackmore said: “The new 3G synthetic surface will be a tremendous boost to the charity and the community, which will be able to provide new multi-sports facilities in the community for all, including disadvantaged young people and those with disabilities.”

Trustee Daron Gregory said: “I have worked as a volunteer at Somerlea Community Centre for over two years and the new multi-sports facilities will help everyone in our community including young people to develop their skills and lead a healthier lifestyle.”

The funding comes from the Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

Under the Landfill Tax Regulations 1996, landfill operators like Biffa Group Ltd are liable for taxes on waste deposited in landfill sites.

The Landfill Communities Fund allows them to donate a small percentage of their tax liability to projects working to improve communities living within the vicinity of landfill sites.

To date, Biffa Award has awarded grants totalling more than £125 million to hundreds of worthwhile projects.

The project has been facilitated by the Derbyshire Environmental Trust.
