Meeting against Somercotes centre

A special meeting to discuss plans to build a distribution centre in Somercotes is set for this Friday after developers applied to extend the time limit for their application.

Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd was granted outline planning permission for a large, 24/7 distribution centre, on land between Birchwood Lane in Somercotes and Cotes Park industrial estate, in 2010, and recently applied to extend the time limit.

Over 300 people have signed a petition against the bid which was delivered to Amber Valley council on Monday.

Paul Curran-Bilbie, of the Birchwood Lane Residents’ Group, claimed that at the time of the original application there were strong local objections and the planning board had refused it twice only for it to be overturned by full council.

He said: “There are major issues with this site including damage to historic hedgerows, impact of wildlife and in particular local nature reserve Pennytown Ponds.

“There are also a number of issues regarding noise pollution, light pollution, drainage and flooding isses, traffic infrastructure issues and more.

“We have already applied for this site to be removed from the local development plan and feel strongly that this planning permission should not be extended.”

Somercotes Parish Council have convened a special meeting on Friday February 22 and local residents are invited from 6.30pm at the Village Hall, Somercotes.
