Jam Jar Appeal is runaway success!

Our Jubilee Jam Jar appeal to plan commemorative trees in our towns has been a runaway success - with the total in the pot now standing at £XXX.
And that number comes after an impressive £88 was donated to our campaign by the 1st Ripley Girl Guides based on Outram Street in the town.
The youngsters have been busy each filling their own jam jars with spare pennies since we launched the appeal in April and this week retired group leader Maureen Salt proudly handed over the fit-to-burst containers at the News office on Grosvenor Road.
She said: “We saw it advertised in the Ripley and Heanor so we decided to do it as a service project to support the Diamond Jubilee and provide some trees for the towns.
“It just seemed a really nice project to take part in – it will be something that will benefit them in the future.”
The 37 Ripley guides each decorated their own jam jars and got to work collecting over the past three months.
“When I emptied some of the jars a few had quite a big amount in them,” said Maureen, of Birch Close, Ripley.
The Jam Jar Appeal has seen the News team up with Amber Valley Borough Council and aim to plant a fitting new tree in Ripley, Heanor and Alfreton, along with commemorative plaques to mark the 60-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
We have been are asking you to donate the spare pennies you have stored in jam jars and pots in your homes and the likes and you have certainly been doing that - smashing our target of £300.
Editor Julie Crouch said: “I couldn’t be happier with the way the appeal has gone so far - our reception has been flooded with copper coins for the past few months and it’s great to see.”
The council is now looking for fitting trees and suitable places in Ripley, Heanor and hopefully Alfreton too for them to be planted.
Venues being considered were Heanor Memorial Park, Crossley Park in Ripley and hopefully Alfreton Park in Alfreton.
Sharon Thomas, council landscape manager, said: “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Jam Jar Appeal with the planting of trees in parks in all of our towns.”
