Fundraising family affair!

Three generations of women in the same family have f ounded a Marie Curie Cancer Care group in Riddings and organised an early Christmas Fair to raise cash.

Marjorie Brocklehurst, 66, her daughter Karen Lilley, 44, and her daughter Rosie, 16, formed the group in February this year after Marjorie’s husband, John, died in November, 2008, from prostate cancer aged 64.

Chairman Karen said: “We are fully formed and official and now have 11 members.

“Our upcoming Xmas Fair will raise vital funds for our Marie Curie Nurses and we would like to appeal to local business for a few raffle prizes.

“We’re also looking for donations of sweets and lollipops and refreshments like mince pies.”

The fair takes place on Saturday, November 17, in Somercotes parish hall from 11am to 1pm.

It will feature stalls with books, cakes and bric a brac, as well as a raffle and tombola. Santa will visit and there will be lucky dip for children.

Karen, of High Street, added: “We’re going to make it as good as we can and make as much as we can for Marie Curie.

“We raised £225 with a tea party in my back garden in August and in the new year we will be looking to do more things. “We want to raise as much money as we can. We are very passionate about it - as long as we’re able we will raise money. It’s such a good cause. And it really is run by fundraisers - every penny counts.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care was founded in 1948 and provides nursing care, free of charge, to terminally ill people, giving them the chance to choose to be cared for at home. If you would like to get involved call Karen on 01773 604831.
