Fight for Codnor Common begins

Campaigners aiming to get land between Codnor and Waingroves protected from future development say they are prepared for this week’s inquiry to determine the site’s fate.

Villagers are expected to turn out in force to the Codnor Common Village Green Inquiry on Monday, March 18, at Lumb Farm, on Derby Road, Marehay.

Belper based developers Peveril Homes already have planning permission for 98 homes there.

But if planning inspectors determine that the site has been used freely for ‘lawful sport and pastimes”, “without intrusion” at the end of the five-day hearing, it will block the development.

A spokesperson for the campaign group Friends of Codnor Common, said: “The group is appealing to everyone who cares about this land to attend the inquiry if at all possible, even if only for a short time. “

The spokesperson added that speakers have already been determined and many others have submitted written statements to demonstrate their support.

The inquiry will be held on March 18, 19 and 20, and then March 25 to 28 as necessary. Sessions starts at 10am on each day and end at 5pm, but there is also an evening session on the first day from 6pm to 8pm.

Peveril Homes is expected to fight the bid at the inquiry and has already fenced off a large part of the development site there.

It won the right to build on the land on appeal in May 2012, having been turned down by Amber Valley Borough Council’s planning board.
