TWO celebrations in Heanor over the Bank Holiday weekend gave the town a welcome boost.

On Saturday the town’s first community fair was held in St Lawrence Church - while May Day was marked with a celebration in the Market Place on Monday.

The decision to hold the community fair was made only a few weeks ago, following calls for an event that would promote the town were made at the first Love Heanor meeting.

Organiser Jane Wells said: “It was absolutely amazing - at one point you couldn’t move for people. We were nervous at the start - wondering if people would come - but they came!”

In all 36 stalls, run by people, groups and businesses from Heanor, were set up in the church, featuring everything from pickles and cupcakes, to gifts and potted plants. Loscoe Scouts acted as porters, delivering leaflets and serving tea, while children from Mundy Junior School sold plants from their new garden; community groups like the Friends of Cromford Canal and Michael House School gave out information about their organisations. Music was provided by the Full House Orchestra and Amber Valley Dance.

The community fair is now set to be a monthly event and Jane says she cannot wait for the next one: “The next one is on June 2 for the Jubilee and we are having a challenge with exercise bikes with pedometers. Pupils, staff and governors from Mundy Junior School versus the general public - to see who can cycle the equivalent distance from Heanor to Buckingham Palace!

“As the weather gets warmer we will have stalls outside. We want to keep it local - something for Heanor and Heanor people. I did not know there were so many cottage industries.”

And on Monday the town’s annual May Day event took place between 11am and 2pm, and was opened by Heanor Mayor Councillor Harry Soar.

Among the attractions were children’s entertainer Albert Alchemy, Heage Windmillers, free childrens’ rides, face painting, Morris dancers, Ripley Green Garters as well as stalls and Maypole dancing.
