Bakery moves premises in Heanor to boost trade

BAKER Birds opened its newest outlet in Heanor this week – and staff are vowing to fight the Chancellor’s VAT hike on pasties.
The Derby-based company, which has 54 shops across the East Midlands, has moved out of its former outlet on High Street to a bigger store on Market Place.
The firm’s area supervisor Karen Wain said the move was good news for pastry lovers in Heanor.
She said: “We feel that this is a much better spot for us.
“It’s right on the Market Place, with better footfall, it’s just a generally better location, it’s right by the bus stops.
“We were never going to close in Heanor, we just wanted to give a better service to the people of the town.”
Birds has been established since 1919 and is still a family-based firm, now employing 670 people.
The new Market Place bakery has expanded its line to serve hot savouries and pastries and has seven staff members.
Karen said the company is unlikely to employ more staff in Heanor, but more hours would be made available to its current employees.
And she added that the team there would be getting behind a national campaign to put a stop to The Government’s controversial ‘Pasty Tax’ bill outlined by Chancellor George Osbourne during the Budget.
If the Bill comes into force, pastries served above ‘ambient temperature’ would be subject to 20 per cent VAT, which bakers say is unworkable and unfair on the pastry buying public.
Karen said: “It’s going to have a massive impact on us and we need to voice our opinion loudly to the Government, that this is not good for our businesses at all.”
And anyone interested in a spot of home baking might be interested in a new cupcake making class set to start in Heanor. Ilkeston-based confectionary experts the Cupcake Geeks are to host lessons on how to make the perfect tea-time treats on June 16, at Mundy Junior School, in Lockton Avenue, and at St Lawrence’s Church on Ilkeston Road, Heaor, on Saturday, July 28.
The lessons last three hours and people do not need to bring any equipment with them.
