Bid to keep Asda money in Langley

A request to use money from a planning agreement with supermarket chain Asda on improvements in Heanor has been rebuked by a
county councillor.

When planning permission was granted to build the Asda store on Station Road Langley Mill, Amber Valley Borough Council negotiated a £50,000 sweetener, known as a section 106 agreement, from the firm to improve shop fronts in the village.

Local businesses need to apply for the money, but a recent report by the borough council states interest in the scheme has dwindled - and with £30,000 still to spend from the fund, it has suggested Heanor shops be given the opportunity to bid for the cash. However Derbyshire county councillor Kevin Parkinson, for the greater Heanor area, has informed the borough officers he will “not support the extension” and wants the money to stay in Langley Mill.

“I am confident Heanor will attract its own ‘s106’ contributions in the future,” he said. He has suggested the money be used to landscape an area by the Lidl store, street sign improvements and a clean up of the area round Asda.
