Awards for some excellent people!

Outstanding people and groups had their achievements and contributions to communities across Derbyshire recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Derbyshire County Council hosted its annual Excellence in the Community Awards at the Devonshire Dome, Buxton last week to honour individuals, groups, voluntary groups and charities which are making a difference to the lives of others.

Councillor Andrew Lewer, said: “Our annual Excellence in the Community Awards are our way of saying thank you to some amazing people who do so much to support and improve communities across Derbyshire.”

Adrian Marriott of Pinxton has been in with St John Ambulance from the age of five and saved the life of a man when he was able to re-start his heart after he’d gone into cardiac arrest. Bernard Marriott, also of Pinxton, is scout leader of the 1st Pinxton Scouts and has organised the “Santa Run” for the past 25 years - a village tradition which involves touring the village for three nights every December handing out sweets to the children, as well as helping with St John Ambulance and Pinxton Church.

Colin Rick and Les Briddon, were nominated by Freda Garget and Patrick Morriss for their hard work keeping Somercotes clean and free from rubbish. Christine Richards, of Ripley, started the Musical Dimensions choir 20 years ago and has helped to raise over £34,000 for charity along the way.

Ripley Music Festival committee members were nominated for their work throughout the year to stage a week of musical events in the town. Moorwood Moor Angling Club encourages people of all ages and abilities to take pleasure in fishing and John and Kathleen Nicklin are the driving force behind the club.

Heanor and District Local History Society members’ dedication in researching, archiving and increasing awareness was said to make “an invaluable contribution to the town.”
