RSPCA officers are appealing for witnesses after a swan was shot twice in the head and killed.
The incident happened in Jacksdale, in a disused part of the Erewash Canal, near to Pye Hill Road.

RSPCA animal collection officers were called to the scene on Wednesday, November 5, but were at first unable to reach the bird through the tangle of reeds.

After a 90-minute rescue effort, the swan was found to have two pellet wounds to its head, a badly swollen head and face and considerable blood loss.

It was so severely injured, it had to be put down to prevent further suffering.

Animal Collection Officer Andy Sowden said: "We had hoped to be able to save the swan but the wounds were just too bad.

"Local people told us the swan was part of a pair, but the other bird has not been seensince so we suspect that it too has been attacked.

"Although the area is off the beaten track, we hope passers-by have noticed something suspicious and can give us any information."
